Managing Discomfort
- Take over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen as directed
- Avoid chewing on the treated side until the soreness subsides
- Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek if there's any swelling
- Stick to soft foods for the first day
Days 2 to 3: What to Expect
Soreness typically peaks within the first 48 hours and then steadily improves. By day 3, most patients feel back to normal or close to it. Some lingering sensitivity to pressure is common and can last up to a week, particularly if you had significant infection before treatment.
Eating and Drinking After a Root Canal
If you received a temporary filling or crown, avoid sticky or hard foods that could dislodge it, and chew on the opposite side of your mouth when possible. Once your permanent crown is placed, you can return to eating normally.
Caring for the Treated Tooth Long-Term
Most root canal-treated teeth need a crown to protect them from fracturing, since the tooth structure is more brittle after treatment.
